Always avoid looking down at the gear lever.
You should have a mental picture of the gear layout. This will enable you to change gear without looking at the diagram on top of the gear lever. Your eyes should be on the road.
With practice, changing gear becomes second nature.

Hi Can you go from 1st to 3rd? I always go from 2nd to 4th and vice versa but I change down gears sequentially from 3rd to 2nd to 1st. Thanks

If its downhill you can skip lots of gears, it depends on the car and how steep the gradient is. In my friends Corsa VXR its quite happy going from 1st to 4th but that wouldn't work well on a normal Corsa. Experience will tell the best gears to use..

so are you able to change from 5th to 1st? i didn't think you could, please correct me if i am wrong, for an example, i am having problems when coming off a dual carraigeway and i am in 5th gear, i know that you should go down gears but i didn't think you could go from 5th straight to first, or 5th to second to then go on the roundabout?

When approaching a roundabout you should be planing to stop and looking to go. The best rule to remember is BBC (brakes before clutch). 5th(or 6th) to 2nd (or 3rd) is a very common gear change if you don't need to give way, but if you do 1st might be needed. There will be a small about of coasting but this method is much smoother than changing down through all the gears(old school). My trainer said 'its cheaper to replace the brake pads than the clutch or gearbox.

I haven't had my lessons yet - but, do you have to take your foot off of the accelerater when you change gears? : )

yes, if you don't it will make lots of noise. It wont' take you too long to get a good feel for the gas and brake pedal. Its the clutch that can take a while to master. Your instructor will help you with this as they have taught many new drivers before. So don't worry about it too much

Push the clutch down before putting it into first, then, before releasing the clutch, use the accelerator to find the biting point and pull away smoothly.

Im going to start having my driving lessons pretty soon, and ive done some practice driving.

This is going to sound pretty stupid, but im having a hard time figuring out how to ease on the clutch when standing still and switching from Neutral to 1st gear without either kicking away with the car or stalling it.

When im up to speed, there are no problems at all, but its difficult getting the hang of the switch from neutral to first without killing the engine. Any tips?
