The Metzger kids make cuneiform script. Going by the location the Bible says Abraham was born (Genesis 11), Abraham was a Sumerian.

Mesopotamia, at that time, contained both Babylon and Sumer. Ur of the Chaldees where the Bible said Abraham was born, was not in in the area of Babylon but was in Sumer.

There are two or three "Ur" cities mentioned in the bible and were also discovered through archealogical digs. The particular one, Ur of the Chaldees mentioned in the bible as being where Abraham was from, wasn't in Babylon it was in Sumer.

  • Actually he could have rather been Babylonian instead of Sumerian, since the Babylonians were a Semitic people and there hasn't always been a clear border between Sumerian and Babylonian territory... the cities like Ur must have had a mixed population (containing also other peoples like Kassites and Ammorites).

  • The bible says Abraham was from Ur, but that doesn't make him Sumerian. Abraham was a descendant of Shem... thus he was a semite. The Sumerians weren't Semitic. Coming from Ur, Abraham was probably able to speak (and maybe write) Sumerian, but I don't think he belonged to the Sumerian ethnicity (just like I wouldn't become Japanese if I moved to Japan).
