1950's style snack bar promo I created for a microcinema here in Phoenix called the Monkey Show. http://www.monkeyshow.org One thing I miss about going to the movies when I was a kid was therse cheesy animated snack bar ads for the theater--or better yet: DRIVE-IN--you were attending. Such footage is so hard to find that I just had to create it for myself! Most people would use Flash to make this kind of animation. I used Photoshop to create all the artwork, and I used iMovie to animate the artwork.

Yes there are obvious anachronisms in here. Those are for comedic effect. This is not an attempt to "fool" the viewer, but rather a celebration of a fun, kitschy style of animation in advertising.

  • you should've depleted the color tones a bit to recreate that really old school bleached out faded film stock look. I don't think things looked this vibrant back in the day!

  • @ZYVZX Well, I wanted to make a nice new pristine one. However, I have been experimenting with recreating that aged film look, so I might just take you up on your suggestion sometime. I'm actually developing the effects for "educational film" parodies, so I even have things like film jumping out of the gate, bad splices, and crud around the splices. Even a melting frame, too!

  • How would you describe/call this theme and art style? Since I have a hard time researching on vintage cartoons , but have no specific name at all like the you made.

  • @scorpingirl "Cartoon Retro" or "Retro-Cartoon". Also, a more technical term that was used back in the day was "Limited Animation" to describe a more frugal school of animation to make it more affordable for commercials and TV shows. Also: Look up "UPA". They produced a lot of this type of material, starting in the 1950's. A good Disney example is "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (available on YouTube!).

  • Fantastic Baron ! Can you tel me what software program you used for it ? Thanks !

  • @Johnnyboy792 Photoshop and iMovie
