Acclaimed Scots director Bill Douglas (Bill Douglas Trilogy) collected early and pre-cinema optical devices such as praxinoscopes, zoetropes and panoramas. He included many of these in his final masterpiece, Comrades (1987), an epic portrayal of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, as seen through the eyes of an itinerant Lanternist (played by Alex Norton, one of 14 roles he plays in the film). Lanterna Magicka explores the history of Bill Douglas's collection and the making of what would prove to be his final film.
