@SlaveOfAVampire yeah, that was what always confused me about it. stefan was clearly up to something shady that he should have kept on the downlow, so why mention Mom at all? it always drove me crazy because of course valerie is going to be interested or want to meet her, etc. stefan could have just made excuses to get away on business or something once in a while and keep both of them in the dark while having his cake and eating it too. :D anyhow thanks for finally clearing this up!

I actrually like this move and the commentary was great. I watched it because I liked Willie on Dark Shadows and wanted to see what other things John Karlen did.

i actually watched this film long before i ever watched dark shadows--this scene always confuses the hell out of me. is stefan's mother a cross-dressing man? is stefan supposed to be a hustler? is the mother his boyfriend and this is why he's always so weird with valerie? I AM SO CONFUSED! anyhow, this movie is amazing. i love it and have forced tons of people to watch it over the years.

In the commentary, they described Stefan as a 'kept man', so basically, yep.
My only guess is that Stefan is planning on maintaining his marriage with Valerie, presumedly while not cutting off his meal ticket. Otherwise, he probably wouldn't have even brought up 'Mother' at all & just made a clean break from him.

Interesting clip. This came out in '71 - so Karlen must have still been working on Dark Shadows at the time?

Yep, he was just away from the show for several weeks (or maybe a month or two, it's mentioned in the commentary, but I can't recall that exact lenght), in Europe.
