This song has been on the edge of my repertoire for some years. I first heard it sung by a friend in teacher training days and then again by Jacqui and Bridie. A while back, I posted a hunting song and received a comment saying it was a good song but a shameful subject. I appreciated that comment as it accepted that history is set but attitudes change. I think the same comment will apply to this song.
I think folk-singers and story-tellers have the opportunity to look at the whole picture. My ex-band-leader told me I couldnt sit on the fence all my life. I disagree with that because its the only place to be to see both points of view. I do come down on sides on some occasions as the final comment on this video hints so dont fall asleep or you'll miss it!
By the way, I love the quote purported to be from General Booth, who founded the Salvation Army,
in reference to the rousing Christian Music outside pubs and Music Halls. "Why should the Devil have the best tunes?"

  • Glad you brought this back towards the centre of your repertoire.

  • Thanks Ranzo. With your background, its easy to see your reasons.

  • Very good, Geoff. And a clever way to get me to this video. :o)

You definitely had me LOL at the ending text. But I think you may have actually inspired such a song.

  • Madam! I am a gentleman. I would never 'lure' a lady to look at my videos - whatever sort! lol

Yes, I was thinking about doing one myself but your song was in that area!

  • Thank you for your comments, Karl-Heinz.

  • Didn't hear this song before. I like it and you performed it perfectly. Envy your video technologie :-)

  • Good job on this song! Hunting has a long tradition, whether all of us like it or not. I like your idea of "fence sitting" - very good point!

  • Thankyou Paolo. I have to admit that I enjoy listening to The Pogues version of this song.
