  • How would I go about using one of these smartdrives as a 12 volt DC motor? I am aware of the wiring process to make them 12volt DC to receive power. I was just wondering if you could use 12 volt to drive it. I'm a novice and am not too sure if it's possible.

  • @unclewooly you are correct, it is not possible to use these as a motor on DC without some fairly complicated electronics. You can make them run on single phase AC but still have to start them manually, and you have no control over speed

  • the best was your son :)

  • Thanks! Its a good safe toy for them, it has a rectifier so produces DC and can run small motors as well as lights. And it is really cheap and easy to make, took me about an hour and $40NZ. Both him and his brother know how it works but can't spin it fast enough to hurt themselves ;>)
