Such blights on society are just as effectively managed by imprisonment. Even Bobby Franks's father stated he never wanted Leopold and Loeb to be executed. I'm glad he didn't change his tune! Two wrongs don't make a right; "an eye for an eye will only leave the world blind." Persons who have no sympathy, pity, or compassion for their fellow-men, are likewise detrimental to society. How then shall we manage them? Reasoning doesn't seem to make a dent. You may at least take comfort in Loeb's end.
Sorry, I have no sympathy, pity or compassion for convicted killers. People who participate in thrill killings, regardless of how brilliant they might be, are a blight on society. I suspect you'd change your tune if you were a friend or family member of the real victim--the boy who was murdered. At least I hope you would.
@leedumett444: I detect from your comment that you must think Bobby Franks has been cheated by Leopold and Loeb's not being executed. Their deaths would not have resurrected Bobby; their executions would only have cut short two lives which may or may not have held future usefulness to society. None of us is qualified to judge. RIP Franks, Leopold, Loeb, and every other victim or perpetrator in history. People are people, and we live in a dangerous world. Vengeance is barbarity and ignorance.
@Lava1964: His name isn't relevant to analysing this case. It is heartbreaking that Bobby Franks died that way; but the ongoing importance of the case is in understanding what caused the crime, not in the fad of celebrating victims in order to justify our own existences. Leopold and Loeb are likewise worth pitying, for the reasons set forth in Clarence Darrow's remarkable closing argument. To try to understand L&L is not to overlook Bobby in any way. The sun shines on both the evil and the good.
@tdiggidy43 yeah, misery loves company, I'm sure they will get plenty of it. I'm glad they are in hell.
