The student didn't step with the punch, he punched before the step which for demo purposes didn't fit into the instructor's game plan. If thrown as a jab, it would have been fine in a fight, but the punch lacked the power it would have had with the step. (punching from above the obi demands a rotation of the hip) Simply a lack of focus.

I hate it when instructors do that! They don't block your punch so they look at you stupid and ask you to do it again!
