  • Dr ommen, I have had an echocardiogram performed with normal cardiac results about ten years ago. Is it probable or possible that a subsequent echocardiogram in the near future may reveal hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

  • @nicknack175 Thank you for your note. I have forwarded your question to Dr. Ommen and will let you know his response.

  • @nicknack175 I received the following response to your questions from Dr. Ommen: It is possible for HCM to become evident following an echocardiogram with normal wall thickness. The recommended screening is echocardiography every 5 years for siblings and adult children of patients with HCM. If the siblings or children are adolescents or engaged in competitive athletics, then the screening frequency is changed to annual echocardiograms.

  • Hi Dr. Ommen- My son had open heart surgery at at 14 due to having a right coronary anomalous, that was detected after near fainting at basketball practice. We were very fortunate. My question to you is do you think that the onsite physical, called the heart of champions, which is doing a stress test, giving by the highschools are sufficient enough for clearing young atheletes to participate in sports?

  • @MsLatisha69 I am not familiar with the Heart of Champions program. The question over what constitutes appropriate screening does not have a clear answer and is widely debated. Dr. Ommen

  • Dr. Ommen, what happens when a myectomy isnt 100% effective? My septum has in fact grown back and according to my cardiologist (from what I understand) the blood vessel either leadering to the septum or near the septum is stealing blood from somewhere else. As a result, blood is not getting to the tip of my heart.

  • Been thinking about doing a storyline about something to do with the heart been looking at many kinds might have to do something about this to make people more aware of it. Might have just found something for the end of season 9 and also to promote awareness with this condition.

  • I have a hard time telling the difference between being out of shape and symptoms of HCM. There are times when I do physical workout, and have some heavy breathing, and sometimes I feel tired for hours (although, in a "good" way.) How do i discern between simply not being in shape and the symptoms of HCM? thanks.

  • @SuperDrumgirl i just now noticed your reponse...but yeah i do. I had open heart surgery to thin out the walls a few years ago and it was successful, but i'm still on medication.
