In this video I show how to read a good old-fashioned vernier calliper with both metric and imperial scales. The current trend is to use either a dial gauge where the fine measurement is directly read from the dial face and the 10mm step spacing being taken from graduations on the body of the instrument or to use an electronic digital gauge with direct reading for the whole measurement.
Personally I don't like instruments with batteries in them as I either leave them switched on and flatten the battery or else it's such a long time since I've used the instrument that the battery has gone flat or worse still it's leaked acid into the housing. Having said that I think for convenience a digital gauge has to be a lot quicker to use but if the battery is flat then it's NBG.

@huelbe Glad you enjoyed it, I like that moment when it all comes together and you realise you've unlocked the mystery. I remember getting to grips with a slide rule and realising that two bits of plastic sliding side by side multiplied and divided numbers in an instant. I'd put that on YouTube but I don't think I've got one anymore, might have to go and look at eBay. Now look what you've gone and done!

Reading callipers was one of the most exciting things my father taught me. Thanks Andy for the refresh session :-)
