This Theater was recently finished this month (OCT 2010) and is based on a popular TV / Movie scifi series. Hey if you are traveling in space do it with style. It measueres 23' x 19' with a 9' ceiling. It consists of 3 KEF iQ 90 tower speakers for the front , 4 Bose 301 speakers for sides and surround , a Sony 12" sub tied into a Clark Tactile Transducer for the riser vibrating at 100lbs per watt from the subwoofer connection off the receiver. The receiver is a Sony 1000 7.1 surround tied into a Panasonic Blu ray / upscaling DVD player . The home computer and cable box are routed through the receiver which makes NFL sunday and Dancing with the Stars against a 120" screen very life like and the projector is razor sharp in color and contrast. Everything is operated through a LOGITECH Touch screen remote. The Projector is a Panansonic AE4000U LCD from the folks at VISUAL APEX.com along with their 120" screen kit. I reviewed and researched MANY projectors and this one will go toe to toe with the high end expensive / out of my budget units. Their screen kit is a solid performer. The frame is made of extruded 4" wide aluminum channel so construction was VERY simple and very sturdy. One person can easily build it but a screen this size you need two to hang it. The star ceiling (10' x10' octagon, square is boring) is an accurate Dec. sky with 1500 points of light and 8 shooting stars. The animated graphics in the back were made on my laptop and are accurated to the series. The seats are called TOP GUN and are extremely comfortable in that making it through a movie is tough sometimes without falling asleep. The acoustical panels I custom made (VERY SIMPLE) which are 2' x 6' x 2" panels surrounding the perimeter of the room , positioned for the best acoustical result. Five of the panels hide DVD cabinets. Without acoustical panels a 5000$ set of speakers (which I don't have) won't sound any better than a 300$ set. I did all the home work , listened to numerous speakers and went with the somewhat higher end speakers that sounded great and fit my budget. Read and then go look and listen for eveyones taste in hearing are different. You can have great speakers without hiring out the kids for free lance farm work to pay for it. The gray beam running across the width is actually the support beam for the house. I didn't want to box it in and then it would have looked like a basement beam hidden. So, I incorporated it into the theme of the theater giving the room the starship bridge feel. It really blends in. The theater was completed in 9 months and that the ONLY thing I didn't do was the carpet. This theater was not out of line for a descent budget . Anyone wishing to build a theater such as this needs to find the space, set a budget , decide on a design and do the research which is half the fun. Include the family for their input , drop to your knees and tell the wife what a goddess she is and have her watch this video. Don't cut corners for in the end you won't be happy saying " I should have done this or should have done that." Build what your dream is. I did have to eliminate the Hooters restaurant motif though to please the wife. So I settled for a Shaggy Dog aka/Tim Allen lit poster in the back of the room which you can see in the video A special thanks to my wife Kathy that without her love and support (A MUST) this could not have come into reality.
Also, Thank You to Visual Apex.com for their help and customer support. Finally did I mention the beverage frig and wine bottle cooler in the back. Pop me a cool one Scotty and beam me up!!!

  • I dont like start trek, wars and stuff, but I loved this room, not the best home theater, but I loved the idea... gratz =D

  • Awesome, now i need to see the stargate room!

  • Very nice, but just 1 Sub to support that Large of a room? Have you added a 2nd or thought about it? My room is just 11x13 & I FEEL the Punch of LFE much more, & added overall Equalized Low-End by having 2 Subs. I am NOT slamming you at all, if you still have 1 Sub or don't see the need for a 2nd. If it WORKS FOR YOU, that's all that matters anyway, right? Great Job tho' I don't know if I could personally Wait 9 months to get it all done. Excellent HT !!

  • Can you beam us all into the theater?

  • WOW PURE GENIUS so much work but what a Cinema-you would even make Scotty jealous.Thank you for sharing this with us,made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and

gave me goose pimples.A dream, you sir have class and passion.

  • Nice job. Lot of passion put into this theater. How did you do the hydraulic lift in the back of your theater? Smart to thank the wife at the end. :) Had to convince my wife that I wanted to build a home theater in our house. Sometimes that's half the battle to building a home theater. Once she saw Johnny Depp's face on our 135" screen, she magically thought the whole idea was great. Funny how that works.
