  • @svenp Hydrogen ion concentration (pH), is only one of many factors that affect reaction rates and equilibrium points of chemical systems. Examples of others include pressure, temperature, and the presence of catalysts, to name a few. In the case of ferrous sulfate, the oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric is reversible. A low pH provides an abundance of protons which shifts the equilibrium point in the direction favouring ferrous over ferric ions.

  • Very nice. How/why does the low pH 'protect' the ferrous from getting oxidized?
