I did the planer trick too, and #1447. Looks like brand new wood.

When stripping the wood on my Ensign, #1126, I found a planer to be the way to go. After scribing the various pieces for easy reassembly, I took it all down and ran it through the planer. The adjustments are fine enough to allow you to remove the finish and none of the wood. Total time to strip all of the parts for one bench, +/- 20 minutes.
