Here's a quick tutorial on how to play bass to Billie Jean by Micheal Jackson. There will be a free PDF to go with this that will have the bassline in notation and bass tab - but you need to subscribe to my ezine at my website.

If you are a beginner and thinking about lessons - I have an online program based on learning real world songs (and NOT scales and arpeggios!). Find out more at:

  • god my left hand kills after playing the first riff a few times

  • @Woodeh06 Yep - it's a good workout!

  • Hey paul, Nice lesson! You have a nice right hand technique. when i play my thumb always slips behind my strings.Maybe you could make a video about right hand technique..i would really apreciate that!

  • @happyduck70 There is a basic one somewhere....try heading to my website and finding the 'virtual dvd' - that's the easiest way to find it. That was one of my first videos - so the production values were poor, but the content was good.

  • I see that youre playing a F# for the first note, but its on the E string. Couldn't you just play it on the D string to get a "Funkier" sound?

  • @Graymatter117 In an ideal world you'll have a keyboard player doubling some of the notes for you (cross reference the original). The way I've shown it is in my opinion the best way to play the riff if there's just you providing it. If you find using the note on the D string sounds better to you...then you should do that. A lot of note choosing is subjective...there's just about never only one way to play something.

  • @hopnoggin1 On the original it's doubled by a keyboard. When I play live I sometimes use an octave pedal on that one note. What I'm trying to teach though is how beginners can play it and get it to sound reasonably authentic wihtout necessarily being 100 per cent right.

  • @howtoplaybassdotcom Thanks for the reply. I was just wanting to be clear With the thoughts. Nice Tutorial. I'm only 14, and I've learned so much from just your channel. I originaly played bass guitar, and the reason I asked about the F# on the D string is because I'm not playing upright bass. I'm also planning on doing a duet with my friend. I dont know If you take requests, but I would appritiate it if you uploaded a tutorial for the vocals on the bass for the song Someone Like You- Adele (:
