omg in the beginning did anyone see steve carrell (if i am not mistaken)?? he saw colbert and raised his eyebrows and smiled in jest!! that was so awesome!!

Stephen's such a nice guy. You know a lot of people there would've probably turned that guy down in since he isn't "well known" but he answered his question with humor. And I don't think he was making fun of him. The interviewer seems to be very well aware of Stephen's character and what he does, so I'm pretty sure he knew he was being funny. Hence the long silence followed by the "How am I doing?" The both of them were just playing around a bit.

Yeah, he's acting like his character as part of the joke, but he's not actually *attacking* the guy.

i've seen interviews of sthephen out of character and he's much more laid back. he is in character here.

Um, no. Outside of character, Stephen isn't that kind of guy. Yeah, he was poking fun at the media and at reporters in general, but he wouldn't have been trying to put that guy down in any way. They were just having fun. (And, IMO, Stephen was hilarious.)
