Because the publishing editors made them cheat or approved it. Editors & writers have the tendency to fuck-up continuity as they see fit based on personal bias or sleazy cash tactics over professional responsibility as it's grossly evident in DC/Marvel's current competitive agenda in comics. Don't tell me that you never heard of retcons before.

@ElectroVandalism Would you like to tell me something that don't know? I've already read that book 3 decades ago. Batman winning by magically getting Spider-Man's powers doesn't count, the writer cheated by over-exaggerating. It was stupid lazy-minded writing made for stupid lazy-minded fanboys.
