IMPORTANT:
This video does have random pauses. Please turn on the annotations to know at which minute mark the video resumes!

I am very sorry for this. The recording program I used allowed me to pause, whenever I wanted, but obviously it didnt work too well. I was already uploading the video, when I noticed the problem. So please, bear with me.

This is a demonstration of how I do the shading in my pictures. The whole process took me a bit over 3 hours, which I compressed into 13 minutes.
The picture shown in this video is a commission for a friend of mine. The character belongs to him.

This video is mainly to demonstrate how I work in terms of tools and technique. My shading style is- at least in my opinion - very much graphic based and not so much drawing in itself.
For instance: I tend to use the pen tool for paths and masks a lot, to make sure I only put the shading on certain parts of the picture and dont "draw over it".
Aside from that, I keep my pictures very organized.
I use a lot of layers - basically for every single element, the picture is made of like highlights, shading and coloring.
I keep them seperate, so I can always go back and change things and dont have to worry about losing important parts of my pictures when I have to redo something.

In this case, I wanted to focus on showing just the shading on the character.
Thats why I didnt include the drawing of the background and I didnt add any special effects or light sources.
This video took very long to produce, longer than I expected, so I didnt want to go overboard with it and just try and see how it would turn out.

What you see in the end of the video is not the final picture.
I just wanted to finish the shading up to this point. This is, how the picture looked, at the end of the vide: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5536179/Hektor.png

And this is how the finished picture looks, all polished and with a nice background added: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5536179/HektorFinal.png

If you like what I did here, you can find more of my pictures on my deviantart profile:

Or under the same alias, on furaffinity, inkbunny and sofurry.

The music used in this video is part of the soundtrack of the videogame "Mafia". The music was composed by Vladimir Simunek

  • Hey ich bin es, Tom :)

Schaut echt super aus. Weiter so! Da werde ich glatt neidisch!

  • @CreationProjects

    Hey,

danke dir! :D Und keinen Grund neidisch zu sein, was David mir immer so von deinen Thief Projekten erzählt klingt auch total geil :D

  • Is all the highlight and shade done with the Hue/Saturation tool, or do you use blending modes too?

  • @sporky111

I use only the blending modes for the shading and highlights, Hue and Saturation is only used for the color layers to adjust them.
