LAVA : That GAL sitting behind him was his lovely wife "MAMA" Reed. She and Jimmy loved each other dearly. She had to tell him the lyrics to his songs because he was normally to drunk to remember them. MAMA Reed. Give her Props.

Saw him at LuAnn's in Dallas in 1963 (or 64). He arrived in a chauffered white Caddilac. Was soo messed up, some gal was sitting behind him and fed him the lines to the song. He was great!!

The blues form can get tedious after a while, I love Jimmy Reed but he was more of a pop performer than a blues guy, he doesn't have the Muddy Waters/Howlin Wolf powerhouse vocals or BB King/Clapton improvisation. His guitar and harmonica were pretty rudimentary, basic chords and licks, but he helped bridge the gap between blues and popular music, kind of like Chuck Berry, though Chuck was much more talented than Jimmy. His pure blues might not be great but he wrote some timeless popular songs.

I can dig what you mean. I felt that way for years, until I learned timing trumps form and feeling trumps everything: the art of doing more with less.
But it would be laughable to say Mr. Reed was a slave to blues form. Some of his biggest hits were crossover pop ("Honest I Do" sounds more like early reggae!), or broke with the usual 1-4-5 ("Ain't That Lovin' You Baby").
"You Don't Have to Go" destroys the 12-bar form, repeating only once: 17 bars, then 13, 12, 12, then 12 played as 4.5+3.5+4!

I understand how important the Blues are to the foundation of Rock and Rock, but, for my taste, that 1-4-5 progression get's a little old after a while. Especially song after song.
