The initial spin causes a small mass on the end of a spring to complete a circuit. Contained in the top is a motor with an eccentric weight, similar to those found in cell phones. After the initial spin, the acceleration of the top is accomplished by the transfer of energy from the spinning eccentric weight in the center of the top to the rotational energy of the whole top. The top stabilizes as the spin velocity of the top speeds up and eventually equals that of the eccentric weight. The top will spin until the batteries die.
