K190 steams to Yarram May 9th 1981 on the now closed and South Gippsland Railway which has since been dismantled east of Leongatha Victoria Australia. The video commences with the train between Oakleigh and Huntingdale. Next it is shown at Nyora and we see the Melbourne bound, or up Yarram Passenger train with a T class diesel electric departing Nyora. K190 and its train was waiting in a siding at Nyora to allow the Yarram passenger train to pass. K190 continued on through Korumburra in cold rainy weather and there are various views of the train as it travelled to Foster where the locomotive and the parlour car were turned and where a ZL goods train brake van was placed on the end of the train to replace the parlour car which was placed on the front of the train to be in postion for the return from Yarram. The parlour car had accomodation for the guard who had to travel at the rear of the train in those times. The ZL van was thus used by the guard until Yarram and taken off at Yarram. On the way to Yarram before Foster at Meeniyan, the locomotive K190, took on water with assistance from the Meeniyan fire brigade, and it took on coal from a four wheel wagon that had been sent there ahead of the special steam train. The locomotive, with the four wheel wagon attached ran back and forward at the Meeniyan platform to allow a grab type lifter to load the coal into K190s tender. After arrival at Yarram, and after essential shunting was completed, the passengers lined up at the Melbourne end of the railway yards to photograph the train departing Yarram. We follow the train back to beyond Fish Creek until darkness descends. The highligh of the video is perhaps K190 climbing from Foster with the view of Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory in the background.

  • Fantastic video of the south gippy line. Never made it to Yarram, but I did get as far as Foster by steam and Welspool behind a T.

  • What a shame this railway is gone, this would of been a fantastic tourist railway, great country side!!
