Woman On A Train, 2000

I filmed this on the metro in Paris. I had my camera in my lap, and sunglasses on. I was looking down with my eyes at the screen, but had my head turned so it looked like I was staring out the window, and just happened to have a camera with the lens pointed at her. When she stares right back at me, I thought I was done for. I suppose she was having a rough day. (this was also the impetus for "30 Seconds of Sunday"...)

the thing is with this vid, is there is too much face - and it seems cruel to the individual in that you haven't seeked permission or been granted this individuals consent to film it - and then ultimately post it on the tube.

I'm just curious as to what kind of reaction(s) you were expecting from the masses, be aware that not everybody would thumb you up for this kind of thing - would u be cool with somebody filming you in this fashion with your face , and then posting it on the web ?

i don't know. wasn't really seeking any particular reaction..certainly not a thumbs up. this was a spontaneous and fleeting moment that interested me. it felt very true,and truth seems rare these days. it is a modern world. there are cameras everywhere. people have been shooting candid imgaes of other people for decades. would it matter if it was a still image on a website? its a portrait of a woman,regardless of video or still image. if she sees it and doesnt want it up,i'll happily remove it.

yeah this is a strange one real thought provoking stuff totally compelling. For me this is very intresting because it feels like I am staring at the women. If this was on the train you could have a quick look and then turn away. Its like the worhol stuff butt with out the subjects consent. Ethically this feels wrong but it it is compelling. I really think you are on to something here nice job,

She was in deep thought about something that isn't going well with her..Maybe a friend died..Maybe she lost her job that day..Maybe she feels guilty for something she done..it's kinda sad if you ask me..if i was you..i would of tooken a moment and asked her if she was okay..You never know..she might of just start talking about what she was thinking..and who knows you both might of ended up as friends
