FF9 wasn't a crap game. I dunno why you think so unless you just didn't grasp the concept of a non-modern game which was the ORIGINAL concept for Final Fantasy for the first few games, basically.

Play it again and try again. Besides, the FF games shouldn't be compared just to FF7, which wasn't the best as is, but more judged on what they did individually.

Go watch the battle with safer sephiroth again yourself.

He's not using meteor there, it's his signature attack 'Supernova'. Almost every single End Boss for Final Fantasy games has a signature attack powerful enough to destroy a planet. Sephy is the only one who cant kill a character with it.

Sephiroth wanted to rule the world at first, then he wanted to become a god so that he can rule the world more. He in fact didn't think the meteor would destory the planet. Also, it wasn't bigger than it, hardly 1/8 of the planet.
