  • Hello and thanks for the comment. A pilot is able to estimate cloud tops in a number of different ways, with the most useful being PIREPS (Pilot Reports). PIREPS are voluntarily communicated to ATC by pilots already in the air. These reports can then be relayed to other pilots via electronic communication or directly on frequency from ATC. Information in a PIREP may contain information regarding winds, temp, sky conditions and the presence of icing or turbulence. Thanks for the question!

  • how do you know what the top of the cloud deck is.. i mean if ur gonna fly 3hrs IFR i guess u don't wanna be flying through clouds the whole time
