i never realised before this was herne the hunter,that stags head hid him well.i can hear the voice now.never knew he had passed on either,very sad .

The show's creator did not want to have the actor wear the Stag's Head costume. John was hired so he could be seen. The part was intended to have him as a shaman, but the production team came up with an elaborate (but cool) costume which hid the actor's face. This is why, from time to time, you see Herne take off his costume to reveal the man underneath.
