I thought the system checked briefly to make sure it was in agitation BEFORE starting the motor

@ itscool|1069: As a former GE service tech, I can tell you it isn't the spin brake making this sound because this model doesn't have a transmission. It has what's called a mode shifter, and this washer runs off a DC induction motor. The squeal is due to the mode shifter being stuck in the spin mode while it is agitating (note the inner basket moving with the agitator; this isn't suppose to happen). You don't know how happy I am that I don't have to deal this this POS anymore.

iam suprized you cant figure out that sound is the spin brake stuck on .
ge is known to make a crap grade washer.
Yah this thing did turn out to be a piece of junk. I paid nearly $500 for the thing and of course the leak wasn't really noticed until after the 1 year warranty was out. So I pitched this thing and got a Maytag.
