Lu Tien-kang, the martial art instructor in the feudal lord's palace is reputed to be the 'Number One Swordsman' of his time though nobody knows what he really looks like since he always wears a mask. One evening, a young swordsman arrives at the palace with his beautiful girlfriend and challenges Lu to a duel, but eventually dies under Lu's sword sharing the same fate as many others who have challenged Lu to duels before. Grief-stricken, the girlfriend of the young swordsman kills herself with her own sword. This tragic scene is witnessed by a youngster hiding up above a tree who then swears to himself that when he grows up, he will defeat Lu and wins over the name of 'The Number One Swordsman'.

Ten years have gone by and the boy is now a young man excelling in swordplay who calls himself 'The Anonymous' (Ti Lung). After defeating several well-known martial art masters with his sword, he sets out for Lu Tien-kang.

In an inn "The Anonymous" comes across a middle-aged man called Chao Yi (Ku Feng) who introduces himself as the physician from the feudal lord's palace. He quotes to "The Anonymous" what Lu has once said, 'a good swordsman should be devoid of all feelings and attachments'. "The Anonymous" succeeds in bringing himself before the feudal lord to arrange for a duel with Lu who is away at the moment. The feudal lord tells Chao Yi to show "The Anonymous" around the town. In a silk fabric store, "The Anonymous" encounters a beautiful girl Ho Lien (Lin Chen-chi) who soon falls in love with the young swordsman and follows him back to the palace.

The feudal lord asks "The Anonymous" to stay in the palace as the assistant martial art instructor. But "The Anonymous" turns down his offer and insists on fighting a duel with Lu Tien-kang, the chief instructor despite the feudal lord's warning that he might lose the duel and get killed just like that young swordsman who came to the palace with his girl friend ten years ago. The evening before the duel, Chao Yi warns "The Anonymous" that he is at a disadvantage to fight the duel with Lu since he has a girl friend to worry about, while Lu is free of all worries, the way that a good swordsman should be. After Chao Yi has left, Ho Lien begs "The Anonymous" to forget about the duel and leaves with her so that they can be together for the rest of their lives. But "The Anonymous" has his mind set on fighting the duel with Lu. At last with his sword, he gets rid of Ho Lien, and of his only attachment in life.....

I remember I watched a 80's series many years ago.Before his duel with his opponent,that guy also went meet his girlfriend.He made a hint and she committed suicide with his spear.The guy then lost the fight and died.But his opponent didn't kill him.At the end of the fight,his spear was cast away and it stuck on the wall.When he was lying on the ground,it fell down on him and killed him !
