"Sustainability is an active condition of problem solving"
Love this quote! This definition is the best I've heard for sustainability, an otherwise misused and often confusing term.

With resources and energy running low we can either reduce our complexity (and thus consumtion) vuluntarially or be forced to. Even if complexity is a problem solving tool, one can have innecesary or misalocated complexity, I belive globally we do have that and that.
