http://localfuture.org The collapse of complex societies of the past can inform the present on the risks of collapse. Dr. Joseph Tainter, author of the book The Collapse of Complex societies, and featured in Leonardo Dicaprio's film The Eleventh Hour, details the factors that led to the collapse of past civilizations including the Roman Empire.

This is part 3 of 7 of a keynote talk delivered to the 2010 International Conference on Sustainability: Energy, Economy, and Environment organized by Local Future nonprofit and directed by Aaron Wissner.

  • The rich didn't pay their taxes... where have I heard this before?

  • living off caital rather than interest... cumulative effects... @sparkstarter: i prefer problem prevention, the benefit ofvwhich is invisible, eg being healthy

  • "Sustainability is an active condition of problem solving"

Love this quote! This definition is the best I've heard for sustainability, an otherwise misused and often confusing term.

  • Great video!

  • With resources and energy running low we can either reduce our complexity (and thus consumtion) vuluntarially or be forced to. Even if complexity is a problem solving tool, one can have innecesary or misalocated complexity, I belive globally we do have that and that.

  • @mrzack888 only time will tell.....

  • @earthwayexperience fool. technology WIll save us. we will use more of each resource, squeeze every last bit with technology. consuming less won't help with the long term.

  • @Jonnybarbs technology will not save us...we need to drastically use less....

  • This is great !

  • I'm looking forward for the 4th and 5th parts... Thanks!
