Phthalates aka "plasticizers" are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and resilient. Phthalates are considered to be the everywhere chemicals and can be found in many products, ranging from children's toys to medical supplies to personal products and cosmetics. Women tend to have higher levels of phthalates in their bodies compared to men because they use more of these products. Phthalates act as endocrine disruptors and can threaten the reproductive system. Phthalates are also associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. To decrease risk, be aware of the products you buy, use simpler and fewer products, and join the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (http://www.safecosmetics.org/). Protection begins with you.
