@kennethpace2 His status( that no one else has come close to) kept him going as well as the other performers of African descent, the exploitation hasn't died. It is no different today, the game has been tweeked a bit. Universities and corporations, give false status to all cultures the promise of recognition and money is the motivation today. It was the only way to show their talent, sad they had to be depicted as savages in return for that allowance. Record labels are still doing this!

I'm so glad to see a new generation appreciating the music played at the Cotton Club. I also thank you for reminding all of us about the racism that was so rampant. It's so sad that the people of Harlem couldn't even get into the club. Despite the horrendous racism it's great that the fantastic music created is what is most remembered from this period. I'm posting a link to this at my Facebook page. I hope everyone else will do the same.

hi i wouldn't mind but please continue to give credit my name is lauren nadel. as for kennethpace's comment- i am not being judgmental it was what happened during that time period from what i studied. don't get me wrong im sure Ellington loved the amount of money he made but the prejudices still withstood at the club.. the racism he must've encountered day to day- no amount of money can make that all disappear.
