In Kenya, a lot of the vegetables grown for export are produced on smaller scale farms. Families lovingly care for these crops as they are an important source of income. They farm with the environment in mind too.
These Kenyan producer groups want to prove how well they farm. Getting the LEAF Marque on their produce is their aim. To do that they need to follow the standards developed in the UK by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming). Waitrose is leading a Food Retail Industry Challenge Fund (FRICH) initiative in Kenya, supported by the UK government's Department for International Development. This is leading to changes in the fields and exciting new opportunities for the farmers and their families.
