In January of 2001, I took a walk around the former Naval Training Center in San Diego. At the time the base had been handed over to the City of San Diego for a variety of uses and tenants. Construction on "Liberty Station" was a few years off.
At the time, I hadn't really developed and filmmaking skills, and really had no intention of sharing the video, so my technique leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately, the base has now been completely transformed, so its all I've got. I've edited as best I could to make it as viewable as possible.
I would love to hear comments that could provide insight or first hand experiences at NTC San Diego. I myself have never served in any branch of the military, but I developed a fascination with the base when I came to play golf at Sail-Ho golf course. Enjoy!

  • Funny all this time over a year ago I had dinner at a place close to the USS Recruit and never realized that I was on what used to be NTC San Diego! Entering the Navy in '90 through NTC Great Lakes brings back memories, and just watching your video made me want to just listen closely and hear the walls speak :) Good job and thanks so much for sharing your vid.

  • I was stationed at NTC from 1985-1986. I stayed at the Homewood Suites three years ago and thought I was "nearby", and when the front desk told me I was ON the old base I was devastated! Even though it's a beautiful place now, there's that thing called nostalgia. I lived in the barracks at 4:00, 5:59, and 7:00. Can anyone point out where the Radioman A school is in this footage? Is it possible to get a map of the old base? My mind plays tricks on me now. : )

  • @schroeder8911 Remember DC1 lockbom and MR1 Herrington. Herrington was funny, a stick of a man, but he thought he was 4 feet wide of muscle

  • The 3 place I remember the most about NTC. Is Del taco, the bowling ally and MR a school. MR a school is @ the 5.40 mark

  • I was stationed there for boot and graduated in Nov 1972. I then did my Radioman 'A' school there and lived in Bldg 14. What a difference a few decades make. So sad to see that the powers that be were so short sighted as to throw a great part of history away like that. Sad.

  • I can not believe that this is the same NTC that I graduated from , and took my A-school at...wow

  • @peak199 I know what you mean. January of 1990 our MR "A" school class graduated from there.

  • Company 278 1971 was the best looking base of all. Shame they closed it. Great Lakes doesn't hold a candle to NTC San Diego. After attending EN school shipped to Nam for the last few months of the PBR's

  • this base closed in 1997.

  • I went hear in 89' and 90.had a lot of fun in that town and on that base. Can still hear the jets ,just like old times
