I must agree with SakuraMayonaka - But there is also the additional need for Dr. Watson as another source of information. In many stories, Holmes needs this extension to help him solve the mystery more quickly.

the first holmes story appeared in serial form in 1887, a year before the ripper murders. holmes was not created as a response to actual murders but as conan-doyle's response to the detective stories of edgar allan poe, which he admired.
