Hank brings Iris coffee from the doctors' private stock, saying it's better than the swill in the cafeteria. Iris says she's never drunk so much coffee in her life. Hank replies that it keeps him going. Iris tells Hank she thinks he was about to say something important to her before he went to get the coffee. They're interrupted when Jamie and Kelsey come out from Tommy's room and deliver a devastating prognosis: although they've brought Tommy's fever down, he isn't responding to the chemotherapy any longer, and this last round was something experimental. They were hoping for a response by now, but it didn't happen, and Tommy's system can't handle a higher dosage. Hank and Iris both wind up fighting tears when Jamie says that they've done everything they can do medically. Jamie goes on to say that there's no reason Tommy can't go home with Hank now if Hank feels up to it, and he then encourages Hank to talk to the hospital counselor. Hank explodes that no damn counselor is going to tell him how to feel about his son dying and hurries off. Iris calls his name, but Jamie tells her to give Hank some time. A tearful Iris gives Kelsey a poem that Tommy wrote for Dean and asks her to give it to Dean on her way home, and she agrees. Iris then leaves. Jamie asks to walk the dejected Kelsey home, promising no conversation, only fresh air, and she agrees. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
Heartbreaking to hear that Tommy hasn't reacted to the treatment...Poor Hank :(
