A popular sportfish in areas of the south where it still thrives, the alligator gar will eventually grow over 6 feet in length and weigh in excess of 150 pounds. Today, the 12-inchers are being released into backwater streams of western Kentucky that flow into the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers where they swam historically. Host, Tim Farmer, follows the journey with the Kentucky Division of Fisheries experts who made the reintroduction possible.
@jumar1281 respectfully, i don't think that they could have been alligator gar. they were likely spotted gar. but i bet they were fun to catch!

We have a lot of invasive carp species here too. The thought of the alligator gar catching and eating large silver and bighead carp is a nice one to me. They will have tons and tons of fish to dine on when they reach those bigger sizes.

We have plenty of Gar. Tons of long nose, short nose, and spotted gars exist here. The Alligator Gar is a species that has been absent from our water for sometime now.

My youngest son caught a 50-pounder the other day (Louisiana). They make good eating, but some people turn their noses up at them. I'll eat their share!
