CUNY students protest tuition hikes

Students and supporters protest tuition hikes for the City University of New York. Free CUNY and OWS demonstrators marched from Madison Square Park to Baruch College where the CUNY Board of Trustees was expected to be voting on the tuition hikes set to go in to effect over the next five years.

@ SilverNrGy985. We get free school until we are adults when it's time to contribute to society. Even after that, those who are ubderprivledged still go for free. Hell, 60% of cuny students get a free ride. But call me a wage slave, I work for what I want

@DavidLister6000 go tell that to the oppressed youths in the ghetto who can't afford to go to school because it's too expensive or because they feel the only way they will get recognition is through selling drugs,or joining gangs in their community to protect and support their own, it only makes more problems by dividing the social class and creating economic discrimination you're an outright fascist and a racist!!

@katrynem Not quite, sure Im using technology to post this. However, I am NOT protesting an increase in tuition while flaunting my luxuries. I am an adult, I make decisions to buy things, I make decisions about whether or not I go to certain schools. If I think its too expensive, I DONT buy it. /end

@turbostang880 isn't that what you are doing now? I get your point though but the thing is thank youtube for the news that are not biased like the news on television. If we cancel facebook, twitter, and do not buy computers, then how will we communicate with each other? I think the technology has brought people into the movement. And whatever happened to 1996's ????? Why can't we end the war, get rid of NAFTA.... I mean why did the corporations got so greedy?

The point in question, the number one demand being put forward is that education should not have to be paid for. Students are demanding a fully funded, excellent and accessible education for all with special emphasis on assisting people of color and the economically underprivileged. The moment you turn it into an for profit industry with state incentives, the number of people marginalized and excluded from attending such institutions begin to rise dramatically. Look at Chile.

The real issue is the percentage of funds that the universities actually get from tuition. Very little goes to the college a majority goes to the state. Fix the distribution its why Binghamton wants to (and should) become a private institution....
