" Valravn " means " raven of the slain " in Danish. In Danish folklore, the valravn is a supernatural raven created when a raven had eaten part of the body of a knight or noblemen killed on the battlefield.
The Danish group, Valravn, started out as the acoustic Medieval music ensemble, Virelai, which got its start playing traditional music at Medieval Fairs. Valravn sings old Faroese ballads in the original language, accompanied by traditional and electronic instruments.
Along with the new sound, Valravn is playing to much larger audiences, including the German Rudolstadt Tanz & Folk Fest, with an audience of over 70,000, in 2009.
Interestingly, the group is comprised of an international cast:
Anna Katrin Egilstrøð (Faroe Islands): Voice, flutes, tambourine, davul, percussion.
Juan Pino (Switzerland/Ecuador): Davul, darbouka, tambourine, frame drums, cajon, jew's harp, acoustic and electronic percussion, samples, voice.
Martin Seeberg (Denmark): Viola, flutes, shawm, jew's harp, hurdy gurdy, percussion, voice.
Søren Hammerlund (Denmark): Hurdy gurdy, mandola, percussion, soundscapes, voice.
Christopher Juul (Denmark): Samples, live electonics.
