Fishing out on Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary on a perfect calm day we saw some action on the horizon and decided to check it out. As we approached we could see the dorsal and tail fin of a large shark.

Typically a basking shark which are very harmless we came very close to observe it but at the last second you can see that this was not backing shark. Looked like a 12 foot great white shark that was sun bathing at the service taking in the sun.

  • Basking Shark, have seen loads of them

  • sharks are can get a little sleepy sometimes. according to the encyclopedia britanica, great whites sleep up to 45 minutes a day. I wish i slept that long, then i could make twice the money!

  • sharks dont sleep

  • @B1985A Ohhhh Ok... I Feel Dumb Now

  • @AliciaFoxFan06 Whale sharks are at least twice the size of this shark

  • if its sleeping its probably dead guys

  • I dont know if great white sharks sleep but apparently they sunbake. Search 'sunbathing sharks'

  • i know a basking and a white. and i'm with you mantra i really cant make up my mind. i've had to have watched it 50 times now. the size of it makes me wanna think its a basking shark, but the first few frames you see the shark it's pectoral thins and dorsal are pretty visible and bear more resemblance to a white. the speed with at which it's cruising seems to point the fact that it's probably a basking shark though but if it was a white, good thing you didnt stop.. JAWS might've taken you out!
