Ive been looking everywhere on YT to find someone doing something interesting with a matrix 12, but it all sounds so boring to me.

Every Synthesizer has its strengths and weaknesses, but many have touted the Oberheim Matrix-12 as the end-all-be-all of analog synths. I love Oberheims because of their Filters which I think is their strongest point. Even the very first SEM had a great sounding filter. The two best in the Oberheim line are the discrete 2-Pole on the original OB-X, and the Filter (or should I say FilterS - there are 15) here on the Matrix-12. That pad starting at 1:04 exemplifies the nature of this beast!!!!

If you want to hear both a Matrix 12 and an Xpander in action, check out the music of Steve Roach. He still uses both instruments. Check out the Storm Surge album, where he's using an Xpander onstage (and this was in 2005!).

This is an amazingly capable synth, it represents the pinacle of the old analog monsters. You kind of need a PHD in Oberheim if you want to sound like Vince Clarke however. I have never programed a patch cable modular however I am guessing that by trial and error they are easier to get cool sounds out of just because everything is in your face and you can grab it.

The Matrix 12 is an amazing instrument which still stands up as one of the finest analogs available. However, the new Virus TI2 (I have the TI2 keyboard) is an amazing keyboard that in many ways surpasses the Matrix. Much better keyboard action...solid as a rock tuning...constant new O.S's and features. It can have a very analog sounding 4 oscillator patch...but can also be very digital sounding....and do FM (a la DX-7). It gets more and more capable of analog emulation with every update.
