When asked about initiatives she finds exciting to work with, Sharon Goodwin from the CPSI Board of Directors, talks about the community care sector. Frontline nurses she works with are creating and testing new tools for medicine reconciliation between hospital visits and community care.

About Sharon Goodwin

Sharon Goodwin is Vice-President, Quality, Care and Services and Chief Information Officer at VON Canada. VON, or the Victoria Order of Nurses is Canada's largest, national, not-for-profit, charitable home and community care organization. As a member of the senior management team at VON, she is responsible for the quality, risk, professional practice and information systems portfolio for VON. At VON, Sharon led the transformation of the organization through accreditation and one of the results was VON being recognized by Accreditation Canada as a leader in client safety in home care. Within Sharon's portfolio, VON co-sponsored with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) a discussion paper and roundtable on the unique aspects of client safety in the home care environment. Also, within her portfolio, VON Canada is currently co-leading with ISMP Canada a national home and community pilot project on medication reconciliation for Safer Healthcare Now! Sharon is an advocate for the use of technology to enhance the safety of health care for clients. She has a broad background in health care and nursing. Prior to her current position, she was the Ontario Director of Operations for Clinidata Corporation where she pioneered a new telephone nurse-advice service for Ontario (Teleheath Ontario). Prior to this, she was the Manager of Case Management Department at the Near North Community Care Access Center in North Bay. Sharon is a qualified Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner, and was influential in the implementation of the NP role in Ontario. Sharon has served as a member at large Nursing Practice for the Board of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and as Chair of the Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario.
