A simple tutorial on how to create a bootable partition on an external hard drive, sd card, or usb flash drive on Mac OS X for use with an iMac or Macbook. I used ScreenFlow to record and edit this video. Thanks for watching!

  • I experience some troubleshooting when doing this...

I have a 400 GB usb external hard-drive with files already saved on it, and I want to make a partition within it.

So when I open up disc utility, selects the main source and hits partition and set volume scheme to current, the "blue area" showing space available does not appear and I can't click on the (+) sign to add a volume/partition. What's wrong?

The current format is MS-DOS (fat)... do I need to reformat it? And if so, will I lose files?

  • @WillyTheGuitarFreak Unfortunately you will have to format the drive, which will result in total loss of data. I'm sorry!

  • TechTipTuesday reminds me of thatsnazzyiphoneguy's TerminalTipTuesday

and thanks for the info :)

  • @wheredmyusernamego That's exactly what it was inspired by! I greatly admire Quinn's work; he's great at what he does. Thank you so much for watching! :)

  • Two people own PCs.

  • When I click "Apply" after clicking the little plus sign, naming the partition, etc., it says "Verifying disk" for a while (about 5 min) then an error pops up, "Partition Failed with the error: Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed." I've tried searching online, making the partition from the install dvd, and I've just done a fresh restore - literally just re-booted and have done nothing before trying to make this partition. What do?

  • @GoRow247 Try hitting "Repair Disk", then try again.
