The first reference I ever saw for this ballard was in the 1847 diary of Edwin Bryant. His wagon train had just went through a horrid thunder storm and I quote: "....one of our party behind me struck up in a sonorous voice the serio-comic elegy of 'Lord Lovell and Lady Nancy' . Shouts of merry laughter succeeded the rehearsal of each stanza...."
