Futurist Mark Pesce is working on a book with Robert Tercek titled "The Next Billion Seconds", and based on excerpts just published it looks like it will be fascinating. In one of the excerpts they mention "communities of expertise", and that seems like a role that could logically be filled by professional associations - if they are proactive enough to grasp the opportunity.
