We knew these moons were tidally locked with their host planets before spaceflight was invented.

Go read something about tidal forces and how they affect bodies in space. Take a look particularely at the orbit of Mercury around the sun. It has a 2/3 tidal lock.

Wrong, Both Mars' moons are tidally locked with the planet. 8 of Jupiter's moons are tidally locked with the planet. 15 of Saturn's moons are tidally locked with the planet. 4 of Uranus' moons are tidally locked with the planet. 2 of Neptune's moons are tidally locked with the planet. And Pluto's moon Charon is tidally locked with the planet.
