Typical Yank, why don't you go and fix your own problems. You have no place in this discussion. As for the rest of you, wake up to yourselves. WE NEED DEVELOPMENT. These five beautiful artificial lakes will only flood a tiny area, they will be great tourist attractions, they won't emit CO2, you'll hardly know they are there, and they will begin to replace the importation of 7 billion tons of coal and 690 million M3 of nat. gas. They'll save Chile Billions 'cause they don't need fuel to gen pwr.

I read he has a problem with his vocal chords.

of course, but what is mr kennedy saying about us' nuclear weapons?, what i saying about guantanamo? what is saying about the kyoto protocol that us don't respect? NOTHING! so, I think first he should take care about the problems of his own country and then about the problems of others... and then, like u said, "work as a global community" but always when the bigger respect we smallers countrys... for other hand, I totally agree with the meaning of mr kennedy said. :p
saludos ^^

I disagree with your comments. Kennedy is not telling Chile what to do...he is encouraging Chilean and all nations to work together to protect our last great wild places, including the Chilean Patagonia's Rio Baker Valley... Protecting (or damming) Patagonia, Chilean Patagonia and the Rio Baker Valley would have implications far beyond Chile's borders...We should work as a global community here to determine what is best for these kinds of places...and not let money and corp. power rule the show

does he not know most of patagonia is actually in argentina!

Destruction of patagonia Chilean, is not the solution to the energy crisis. We do not want to ENDESA Spain in ours patagonia. we are thankful for the support of bod, and are thankful for all the support of the honest and sencibles people with the environment. " patagonia don´t dam patagonia" , not to the cheap policy, not to the insults, not to the intolerance, we only want one patagonia free of contamination.

Yes, so you hate yourself? Just curious.

He is channeling for Katherine Hepburn, thank goodness.

you wouldn't be using a computer and be logging on youtube if it wasn't for the american's double standards and twisted morals.

Why does he talk like that.
It is true, there are other options to obtain power in Chile. Atacam is the driest dessert with clearest skies in the world. Who in Chile is talking about solar energy? Who is talking about wind power? Do we have to destroy rivers that are unique in the world to get electricity? I DONT THINK SO. Lets try to find alternative resourses for this power. Why not spend some of the surpluses created by copper export to research about this, we could become the workl leader in solar energy if we wanted.

Thanks for your comments and recognition that alternative energy sources are available and should be further explored. NRDC is working with our Chilean partners Ecosistemas, Citizens Coalition of Reserve of Life and others to build awareness and prevent construction of these dams. We're also developing a study on the potentials of renewable energy, efficiency and cogeneration

I'm Chilean.I like the fact that want to save Patagonia but a dam is way better than burning oil. Chile is in a pretty bad situation when it comes to Energy. The dam is not going to stop the water for ever. If you want to save Patagonia and many beautiful places around the world, start by asking the US CONGRESS to pass some serious law to stop the pollution that United States is producing, they should take some Europeans countries as an example. Good luck!

The choice is not between dams and oil. There are better energy solutions for Chile, including employing basic efficiency measures. To date there hasn't been serious studies on alternatives to the dams in Chile. This project would degrade the rivers and industrialize one of the most pristine places on the planet. Yes the US needs to do more to reduce its own pollution and to protect its special places, but all countries have a responsibility to preserve the environment for the next generation.

This is "hilarious". Chile must save Patagonia (from water, not pollution) for people like this to have a pretty place to go on vacations. But at the same time, the US is the biggest responsible for global warming. They care about a few square kilometers of land but not about the whole world (that's so "funny"). Ask your government to sign the Kyoto protocol first, then we can talk about dams. Seriously.

We're as concerned as you are about U.S. global warming emissions and working hard to persuade our cities, states, and federal government to take action. Patagonia is more than just a pretty place; it's one of our planet's most natural regions. The proposed hydro scheme is massive, including the world's longest transmission line, and would be devastating. That is why Chilean environmentalists and communities asked us to stop foreign-owned companies from implementing this ill-conceived project.
