This video cnsists of out takes from the 1974 Film Australia production of " A Steam Train Passes". Unfortunately no audio track was was recovered to accompany the video.
Wonderful footage. It shows a railway in it's prime before the economists ripped it to bits. Just a pity more footage wasn't included in the final production.
This was history in the making. Commissioner Shirley had tried his best to ban all steam hauled tours during his reign, but this movie had been promised so there was little he could do about it, Total secrecy surrounded the filming, but it wasn't long before people began to discover what was happening, and gradually the numbers of rail-side fans increased. But how well I remember being at Westmead that first cold winter's morning with my Bolex 8mm. There was no-one else there! Golden days!
What a Gem.........Top Footage Thankyou...You Tube at its best

Pity about the sound, but classic stuff. Thanks for digging it up.
