I don't know why such beautiful music makes people think so much about politics... Thanks for posting this, I suddenly really wanted to hear it and here it was, so sad and sublime. Ah, the wonders of Youtube (and Mahler, and Fischer-Dieskau)!

What does Dieskau have to do with that? Jeez, get over it. My jewish great grandfather died in a german death camp in 44, the same year that his romanian wife (step-great-grandmother) was to be gang raped twice by russian soldiers. I play Silent Hunter all day long in a german sub while listening to russian folk music. I'm anti-israeli, because of their Palestinian policy and my favourite battle of all times is Stalingrad. Stop turning history into propaganda by yourselves.

Music does unite people... thanks for explaining all of that to me. I'd never realized how profound the effects of the wars really were in Europe! My culture and history is American, so I don't have a strong sense of the suffering of my people, the way many Europeans do. I feel like us Americans are lacking an understanding of suffering, since we've lived so well for so long. I respect other nations, but I love my country. That's why I'm afraid for it! :(

Don't we all? I guess most Europeans have stories like this. Fischer himself had his brother killed by the Nazi regime and most of his family died in the war. I too have some great stories, but I also can't judge, take pride or be angered by things that happened before I was born. My pride is to be European and that my history is that of Europe, with both miracles and suffering. A former Wehrmacht soldier singing Mahler? That's how the world really turns. There is no hate in music.

I'm sorry you have to live with that knowledge of their sufferings.

YES, even though months have gone by now since DFD passed away, one keeps coming back to this most human -- and most humane -- of all voices -- and indeed, of all artists....How I loved this man for what he gave me musically and in so many other ways... Au revoir, meastro, au revoir..

Beuatiful. Leave politics out of music if at all possible, otherwise you can turn something beuatiful into something harsh and ugly. Hats off to one of the greatest baritone voices of our time.

Can we stop with the Nazi (who was and who isn't anti-semitic) talk. I thought this was exclusive to Wagner videos, i thought wrong. Unfortunately these are stains that one must reconcile while listening to anyone who was 'possibly' associated with Nazism. What is almost undeniable is that this voice is probably the greatest of the 20th century. Just respect the voice and the music please, it is amazing and an inspiration. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
