The fifth piece in my senior recital is composed by George Crumb for "amplified piano," by which he means that he extends the usual expressive abilities of the instrument, belonging to his Makrokosmos series based on the Zodiac. The piece contains excerpts of the middle of Chopin's "Fantasie-Impromptu" which are weaved in and out of the melody. My interpretation is of a person drifting in and out of a dream with the final loud exclamation to be the person waking up.
