Magic loop is a useful technique for knitting in the round, enabling you to knit any size piece, even something as small as glove fingers, on one long circular needle.
Knit socks and other small items without dpns!
For more information, including a free shrug pattern that uses this technique, visit http://abigailscraftshowto.com/2010/04/magic-loop-knitting-cabled-shrug/
