  • @wav5000kb There are very many kinds of tape cartridges. The 3584 is one of the most advanced products on the market. There are many options for just the 3584. According to the IBM web site, the biggest cartridge currently available holds 4000 gigabytes (4 terabytes). The biggest possible system would take up a large room and could hold 180 petabytes (188743680 gigabytes).

  • I guess it's cheaper to pay $7,000,000 for a robot to retrieve cartridges rather than pay an employee to get the cartridges themselves.

  • @RealDragonHawk and how many gb has eine tape?

  • @wav5000kb It's a robotic system for loading, unloading, and storing magnetic tape cartridges for a computer. Each of those vaguely book-looking things on the shelves is a tape cartridge. Each cartridge stores information -- like a computer disk or USB flash drive. The tapes have to be loaded into a drive to read or write them. This sort of system is used when a business has a lot of archive data that it doesn't need very often.

  • what is that doing?

or better: what is it good for?

  • Badass.

  • ibm - just a great company :-)

  • Ammmaazzinng :-p
